My background is NOT done - Don't Judge me

Introduction on autism
Everyone is born different weather if they have blue or green eyes or have different shades of skin but does having a syndrome like autism make a child any different than us? Many people think that children diagnose with autism are retarded but in reality they are just as smart as us. Children diagnose with autism just need a little bit more support than we do in things that they do. Such as, being social, learning how to control feelings or their own personal problems. When being diagnose with autism many kids are put down for the simple fact people do not think that are “normal” which leads the question what do children with autism need to do to be integrated into society?

Background
Autism spectrum disorder is a wide range of categories of conditions that share alike objective symptoms. This leads autism to be a syndrome. A syndrome is a group of symptoms that indicate a condition. The various symptoms could be social deficits, sensory issues, unexplainable anger and tantrums, etc. Although Autism has similarities, “experts believe that all autism spectrums disorders are as individuals as finger print.” This means that there can be 7 kids that are diagnosis with autism in a class room but each one of them are different in there disorder.  Not only do people who are on the Autism spectrum have similarities but they also have similarities with people who are diagnosed with the Asperger syndrome. Asperger syndrome is a type of pervasive development disorder.  A pervasive development disorder is a group conditions that consist delays in development of regular everyday life skills, socialize skills and to use imagination. Though this is the definition of autism it took a lot to come up with what autism is and where it came from.
In 1943, Donald Gray Triplett was the first guy to be diagnosed with autism. Which made him case 1. But, before his diagnose of autism doctors would say, “That autism was brought on by bad mothers, whose chilly behavior toward their children led the youngsters to withdraw into a safe but private world.” When really, it was different complications in the brain but most common with the communication part of the brain that make a lot of kids like Donald diagnose with autism. But, just because people with autism have communication issues does not mean there any different than us. Matter of fact they are very intelligent and do many things that people like us who don’t have autism can’t do. For instance, Donald had the “ability to name musical notes as they were played on a piano and a genius for multiplying numbers in his head.”  Even a mind reader named Polgar gave him different multiplication problems like “87 times 23,” and Donald, with his eyes closed and not a hint of hesitation, correctly answered “2,001.” Not only that. But, Donald could just look at a brick building and till how many bricks where made out of that building. With Donald’s amazing abilities, it shows a great example of how people who are autistic are normal just like us; they just need assistances at times.

  2. So far, your essay is very informative, particularly in the background section. Using Donald's case to give an idea of the origins and a small preview of what goes on inside the head of an autist was a great strategy. Have you done any other research on savants other than on Donald? The way you talked about him kind of set it up to do that sort of discussion. Your thesis seemed clear to me: "Children in autism just need a little more support..." All that I would work on are your grammar errors like Darrell previously commented.

  4. Reasearch Paper Topic - Autism
Your thesis is clearly stated - "Just because people with autism have communication issues does not mean there any different than us."
Positive - This paper kept me interested and wanting me to keep on reading, especially the story about Donald. I liked how you intergrated the story and showed how people diagnosed with autism are very smart
Negative - I dont really have anything to say but that you have some grammar and spelling mistakes
You convince me that this topic is important to know b/c a lot of people have a misconception of autism and you make it clear that just b/c you autism doesnt make you less of a person or anything
I would want to know what other things make people with autism the same as us like not only are they intelligent but ...

  6. 1. This research is about children diagnosed with autism.
    2. Thesis: When being diagnose with autism many kids are put down for the simple fact people do not think that are “normal” which leads the question what do children with autism need to do to be integrated into society?
    3. I like how you pulled me in with a question that already allows for me to do some reflection on my part. I also like that you give me more in depth information on what autism is and how it can affect a child’s everyday lifestyle.
I also like how you say “Matter of fact they are very intelligent and do many things that people like us who don’t have autism can’t do”. Although, I think it should be worded a little different because you say “us”. Your audience is not only people without autism so instead of saying “us” you can say, “Matter of fact they are very intelligent and do many things that people who are not diagnosed with autism cannot do”.
    4. You have quotations but your source have not yet been cited. I also think you should clarify if you are only talking about children diagnosed with autism or people in general?
    5. Andrea, you convince me that your research paper is important because people tend to judge children who are autistic because they act different then a person who is not diagnosed with autism. But just like many other situations in life, if you are different, act different to others based on what the norm of the majority is, then you have a high chance of being looked down upon and most likely not accepted in certain places, groups, etc. I believe it is important that one is aware of this because its not a healthy habit for one to have, and so reading about your research topic can give the opportunity for one to open their eyes to a new perspective.
    6. I would like to know more about how a person diagnosed with autism copes with this fact.
